UAC 2024 Spring Writing Workshop Series

With the onset of the 2024 Spring semester, transitioning into academic life can be challenging, especially for non-native English speakers. Recognizing this, the University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC) has taken a proactive step to support its students, particularly freshmen, who might find essay writing a formidable task.

The UAC Writing Center is excited to announce the launch of a two-week intensive workshop series focused on the fundamentals of basic essay writing. This initiative is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and confidence to excel in their academic writing endeavors.

Workshop Schedule & Details:

  • Duration: March 4th to 14th, 2024
  • Days: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday
  • Time: 12:00 PM to 12:40 PM (40 minutes)

In the first week of the series, approximately 40 students engaged in sessions that covered the creation of effective outlines, crafting compelling thesis statements and introductions, as well as the development of topic sentences and body paragraphs. The turnout and enthusiasm of the participants highlight the demand and appreciation for such supportive academic initiatives.

Ga Hyun Choi, a Junior majoring in Communication, major shared her experience, saying, “During my time in college, I’ve had to write numerous essays. Through this writing workshop hosted by the Writing Center, I learned about the core elements of effective writing and how to craft meaningful content. It was also incredibly helpful to understand how to structure the different parts of an essay properly. The experience was truly beneficial for me.”

Upcoming Sessions:

The following week promises to build on this solid foundation with topics that include:

  • March 11th (Monday): Quotations, Data, and APA
  • March 12th (Tuesday): Conclusions
  • March 14th (Thursday): Utilizing the Library

To make the workshops more accessible and to encourage participation, the UAC Writing Center is offering free lunch for the first 40 students who register for each session.

These workshops represent a valuable opportunity for UAC students to enhance their writing skills in an academic context. By focusing on essential writing components and research techniques, the series aims to demystify the essay writing process and empower students to approach their assignments with confidence and clarity.

The UAC Writing Center encourages all interested students to take advantage of this unique learning opportunity, whether those struggling with their writing assignments or simply wishing to refine their skills. These workshops are tailored to meet a wide range of needs and proficiency levels.
