As the college application season begins following Korea’s annual College Scholastic Ability Test, high school seniors and their families face one of the most critical decisions of their lives. In today’s global era, selecting a university that nurtures both international perspectives and practical skills is more important than ever.

The University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC) stands out as a compelling option for students and parents alike. Located in Korea, UAC offers the same high-quality curriculum and degrees as its U.S. counterpart while providing a distinctive learning environment. This article explores how UAC helps students achieve academic growth and embark on global careers through the inspiring stories of its alumni and current students.

Alumni Success Stories: Taking the First Step Toward a Global Career

Hyojeong Beth Ko (B.S. in Urban Ecology, ’21; M.S. in Urban Ecology, ’23): Solving Transportation Inequity as a Global Expert

Hyojeong Beth Ko currently works at High Valley Transit in Utah, where she oversees public transit system design and operations. She credits her time at UAC for shaping her career through its multicultural learning environment and hands-on research projects.

“Transportation is more than a means of travel—it’s a key factor in determining quality of life and community sustainability. I am dedicated to addressing transit inequities in rural areas and creating accessible public transit systems for all,” she shares.

At UAC, Hyojeong gained a global perspective through interactions with peers and professors from different backgrounds, which helped her adapt and thrive in a new environment. Additionally, her experience as a research assistant on a senior mobility project was pivotal in defining her career path.

Yujin Kim (B.A. in Communication, ’19): Bridging Academia and Practice as a Communication Strategist

Yujin Kim earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication at UAC and is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Communication at Seoul National University, specializing in health promotion strategies.

“UAC’s English-language courses and various hands-on activities gave me the confidence to tackle challenges in global environments. Practical assignments, such as designing PR campaigns, were invaluable experiences that bridged theory and practice,” she explains.

Yujin appreciates the unique blend of academic rigor and practical application at UAC, which laid the foundation for her communication career.

“Interacting with peers from different backgrounds expanded my global perspective without having to leave Korea. The campus culture also includes American-style experiences, like stress relief sessions during exam periods and networking events, fostering open-mindedness,” she adds.

Student Perspectives: Growth Through Creativity and Exploration

Madison Chanhpheng (Sophomore, Film & Media Arts): Bringing Creative Visions to Life

Madison Chanhpheng, a sophomore majoring in Film & Media Arts, finds joy in creating and editing films. Winning an award at an on-campus film festival boosted her confidence.

“Small class sizes allowed for close communication with professors, which helped me successfully complete my projects. I’ve gained both technical and language skills essential for the global film industry,” she says.

She highlights that UAC’s intimate class settings and practical coursework have been instrumental in her academic growth and preparation for an international career.

Jong Hyun Lee (Freshman, Information Systems): Discovering New Possibilities Through Flexible Major Options

Jong Hyun Lee initially started his studies in Communication but discovered a passion for Business and Information Systems after exploring various courses. He emphasizes how UAC’s flexible academic structure helped him design a plan tailored to his interests and skills.

“Before taking classes, it’s hard to know if a major truly suits you. At UAC, I could explore different fields and find what’s right for me. The seamless process of changing majors was a huge plus,” he shares.

He also values the campus’s open learning environment, where students freely share ideas regardless of age or academic standing.

“Unlike traditional hierarchical systems in Korean universities, UAC fosters an egalitarian atmosphere. This environment helped me focus on both academic and personal growth,” he adds.

Why Choose the University of Utah Asia Campus?

1. Earn a U.S. Degree Without Leaving Korea

Jong Hyun cites the ability to earn a U.S. degree while staying in Korea as one of UAC’s greatest advantages.

“UAC offers a chance to receive American-style education in Korea, allowing me to stay close to my family. It reduces emotional and financial strain while providing the best of both worlds,” he explains.

Yujin agrees, noting the unique combination of a familiar environment with a rigorous U.S. curriculum.

“Having spent time as an exchange student in the U.S., I appreciated the cultural exposure but also faced challenges like homesickness. UAC provided a stable yet globally competitive alternative,” she shares.

2. Small Class Sizes and Personalized Mentoring

Madison emphasizes how UAC’s small classes positively impact learning.

“Unlike the large and formal lectures typical of Korean universities, UAC’s intimate environment encourages open communication and active participation. This setting is especially effective for Film & Media Arts students,” she explains.

Hyojeong echoes this sentiment, highlighting UAC’s 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

“The small classes provided individualized feedback and guidance, which greatly enhanced my learning experience. This support built the confidence I needed to kickstart my career,” she says.

3. Expanding Global Perspectives and English Proficiency

At UAC, students naturally develop global perspectives. Jong Hyun explains,

“All courses are taught in English, which was challenging at first, but I improved significantly thanks to campus resources like the Language Lab and Writing Center.”

He also highlights the value of working with peers from different backgrounds, which fosters collaboration and problem-solving skills for a globalized world.

Madison shares how her studies in Korea broadened her horizons.

“Collaborating with peers from around the world has taught me to understand and respect different cultures. Living in Korea has helped me develop adaptability and an open mindset, which are critical for my global career.”

A Message for Future Students

UAC students and alumni encourage prospective students to take bold steps toward their dreams.

“UAC evaluates applicants holistically, considering leadership experiences and personal achievements alongside academics. Be honest in sharing your story. Preparing your English skills in advance will also help you succeed,” they advise.

The stories of UAC’s students and alumni reflect the creative learning environment, global exposure, and flexible academic opportunities the campus provides. By combining academic depth with real-world experiences, UAC equips students to thrive in the global society. For those with ambition and a global mindset, UAC is the perfect place to realize their potential.
