The University of Utah Asia Campus Career & Internship Development Center hosted a heartfelt and practical career talk titled “From Student to Scholar” with University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC) and main campus alumnus, Hyun Woo (Scott) Jo. Held in U108 during the lunch hour, the session provided current students with firsthand insight into balancing academic success with real-world experience.
Scott shared his journey from being an undergraduate student at UAC to continuing his academic pursuits at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. His candid storytelling gave students a behind-the-scenes look at both campuses, highlighting the cultural and academic transitions he navigated, as well as the mindset needed to succeed in both environments.
Throughout the talk, Scott emphasized the importance of time management, goal-setting, and perseverance. He shared how he was able to maintain a strong GPA while actively pursuing internships, research opportunities, and extracurricular involvement. His advice on seeking out resources early and building relationships with faculty and peers resonated strongly with attendees.
What set the session apart was Scott’s genuine approach—he not only spoke about his successes but also acknowledged the challenges and doubts he faced along the way. He addressed students’ concerns with thoughtful responses, offering specific strategies for staying motivated and stepping outside of comfort zones to take on new experiences.
Students praised the session for its authenticity and relatability, with many expressing renewed confidence and motivation to push forward with their academic and career goals. Scott’s story served as a powerful reminder that with the right mindset and support, students can transform their university journey into something truly impactful.
