The University of Utah Asia Campus Career & Internship Development Center kicked off the semester with a motivational boost through its first career event, “Empower U: Career & Life Inspiration.” This special session welcomed Mr. Gibson Kim—a U.S. Army officer and Top 8 finalist on Netflix’s Physical 100: Season 2—who spoke candidly with students about his journey, the power of resilience, and the importance of pushing past life’s challenges.
Held in an intimate and interactive setting, the event gave students an opportunity not just to listen but to engage—through an open Q&A where Mr. Kim offered practical advice on overcoming obstacles, building mental strength, and staying committed to one’s goals. Sharing stories from his time on one of Netflix’s most grueling physical competitions, Mr. Kim tied in lessons that were equally relevant for career growth and personal development.
What made Mr. Kim’s talk especially impactful was his authenticity. He shared moments of both triumph and vulnerability, reminding students that success is not just about winning, but about consistently showing up—even when things get hard. His dual identity as a military officer and reality show competitor brought a unique perspective that resonated deeply with attendees navigating their own academic and professional paths.
The CIDC was proud to host this event as part of its ongoing mission to provide students with direct access to real-world insights and role models who inspire action. As students gear up for the semester ahead, “Empower U” set the tone with a message that was clear: resilience, self-belief, and discipline are the ultimate ingredients for a successful life and career.
Thank you to Mr. Gibson Kim (@barbellandprotein) for sharing your journey and reminding our students of the strength that lies within each of them. We look forward to continuing to empower our community with more meaningful conversations throughout the year.
