Jackie Benseler, Department Manager of Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) at the University of Utah, held an info session in the UAC PSY Department on April 11th, 2025. This event was organized thanks to the PSY faculty’s passion for supporting UAC PSY students to engage in more research-based internships at the HMHI once they transfer to SLC.

The session covered general information about the HMHI, its vision for patient care, and the new Mental Health Translational Research Building, which is set to be completed in early 2026. Attendees also learned about potential opportunities they can pursue during their undergraduate years, as well as available positions after graduation with an OPT, such as a psychiatric technician or clinical research coordinator.

One of the attendees, Seungmi Lee, shared that the session provided insight into UAC Psychology students securing an on-campus part-time job by working as a psychiatric technician aide or clinical research coordinator (See the list of responsibilities for each role below).

Psychiatric technicians

• Provide direct care and support to patients with mental health conditions
• Assist with daily activities
• Monitor patients’ well-being
• Contribute to a safe and therapeutic environment

Clinical research coordinators

• Play a vital role in conducting research studies
• Manage clinical data
• Ensure adherence to protocols while working closely with patients and research teams
