The University of Utah is excited to celebrate our 175th anniversary this year! Look forward to a series of anniversary events, including volunteer opportunities during the Days of Service, TED Talk-style discussions, and the Grand Gala.
As the University of Utah approaches its 175th birthday, it is time for us to reflect on the many achievements this proud institution has made since its humble beginning in 1850. The university was originally founded with the simple goal of providing students the opportunity to grow and improve in a higher learning setting.
A Legacy of Growth and Achievement
From its humble beginnings with just 25 students, the University of Utah has expanded into a dynamic institution with over 26,820 undergraduate students and 8,400 graduate students. The university’s global impact has grown as well, with the establishment of the University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC) in 2014, offering students in Korea and beyond a unique, globally integrated education experience. Today, UAC continues to thrive, with approximately 700 students contributing to the university’s inclusive and international community.
A Legacy of Innovation and Leadership
For 175 years, the University of Utah has produced influential alumni who have made significant contributions across various industries. John Warnock, co-founder of Adobe Systems, revolutionized digital publishing; Edwin Catmull, co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios, played a key role in advancing computer animation; and Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, shaped modern leadership philosophy.
The university has also made significant contributions to Korea’s academic and scientific development. Dr. Tae-Kyu Lee, Korea’s first PhD in chemistry and the nation’s first Nobel Prize nominee, was a professor at the University of Utah from 1948 to 1973, leaving a lasting impact on scientific research.
Nicknamed “Silicon Slopes”, the University of Utah is known for its entrepreneurial spirit, producing one of the highest numbers of startup founders in the United States. UAC continues this tradition, expanding its innovative programs and state-of-the-art educational facilities over the past decade to support students in becoming future global leaders.
