[Student Spotlight] A Guide to Cherry Blossom Season in Korea

Studying abroad in Korea includes experiencing seasonal changes, and that includes cherry blossoms, which are one of the most popular and anticipated times of the year. As the blossoms begin to bloom around South Korea, we are always amazed by their beauty. This year, they’re actually blooming a week earlier than normal due to the warm weather we’ve been having these past few weeks. Sadly, their beauty is fleeting and only lasts around two weeks. So, you might be wondering where the best places to see cherry blossoms are. I’ve created a list of beautiful and popular spots known for their breathtaking views.

Yeouido Hangang Park

One of the most popular spots in Seoul for cherry blossom viewing is Yeouido Hangang Park, where gorgeous cherry blossom trees line the streets and light up at night. There are 1,886 cherry blossom trees that line the western end of Yeouido Island. During this time of year, they also host the Spring Flower Festival, where you can see not only cherry blossoms but also other beautiful flowers like azaleas and forsythia. It’s an amazing photo op and a wonderful walk to take with friends. It’s a very popular viewing spot, so it can get busy, but it’s totally worth it.

Namsan Tower

Another amazing viewing location, and my favorite in Seoul, is Namsan Tower, where you can walk or take a bus up and down the cherry blossom-filled path to the tower. The buses may be a bit packed on the weekends, but the long walk is so worth it. The trail isn’t too steep, and the views are so beautiful that it doesn’t matter. My recommendation is to take the bus up and then walk back down at sunset or after the sun goes down. The cherry blossoms lit up by the lights are just magical.

Jeju Island

If you’re looking for a unique place to see cherry blossoms, Jeju Island is another great option. Jeju is known for its larger cherry blossoms, which make the experience feel a little different compared to other cities in Korea.

It’s also a great opportunity for students who want to travel and explore more of Korea outside of Seoul and Incheon. The island has a more relaxed atmosphere, and the cherry blossoms combined with the natural scenery make it a really beautiful place to visit.

Busan

Another amazing place to view cherry blossoms is Busan. One of the most popular spots is Oncheoncheon Citizens’ Park, where cherry blossom trees line the walking paths along the stream. It’s a great place to walk around, take pictures, and enjoy the scenery with friends.

Busan is also known for having cherry blossoms with ocean views, which makes it a little different from Seoul. It tends to be less crowded as well, which creates a more relaxed experience overall.

My personal favorite place to see cherry blossoms in Busan is Dongnae Eupseong Fortress Site. The area is covered in cherry blossom trees, and it feels like you’re walking through a forest of blossoms. It’s definitely one of the most memorable places I’ve visited during cherry blossom season.

Other Spots to Check Out

If you’re staying closer to Seoul, there are still plenty of other great places to see cherry blossoms. Seoul Forest, near Seongsu-dong, is a really nice area to walk around and enjoy the blossoms in a quieter setting.

Even areas like Gangnam have cherry blossoms along the streets, so you don’t always have to travel far or go to a super busy tourist spot.

Tips for Viewing

Since cherry blossom season is so popular, it can get crowded quickly, especially at well-known spots. Going earlier in the day can help you avoid the biggest crowds.

It’s also a good idea to bring snacks or have a small picnic with friends while enjoying the scenery. The weather in spring can change pretty quickly, so wearing layers will help you stay comfortable throughout the day.

Conclusion

Cherry blossom season is truly a must-do experience when studying abroad in Korea. It’s a short but beautiful time that completely changes the atmosphere of the country.

Taking the time to explore different locations, whether in Seoul or traveling to places like Busan or Jeju, makes the experience even more special.

These moments are what make studying abroad so memorable. From traveling with friends to simply enjoying the scenery, cherry blossom season is something you won’t want to miss during your time in Korea.
